Top Tips….How do we run in the wind?

Some people love the feel and challenge of running in windy conditions, other do all they can to avoid it. Nicola and Neil from Tape2Tape have ran in every extreme of weather conditions and love sharing Top Tips of how you can make the experience a more pleasurable one.  In a strange sort of way, running in windy conditions does actually make you a stronger runner for when the conditions are calmer.

Dress Appropriately

  • Layer Up: The wind can make it feel much colder than it is, so wear layers that can trap heat without causing you to overheat.
  • Windproof Gear: A windproof jacket or vest can help protect your core from the wind. Look for breathable fabrics that allow moisture to escape while blocking the wind.
  • Hat and Gloves: A snug-fitting hat can help keep your head warm and prevent wind from affecting your vision. Gloves can keep your hands from getting too cold.

Use the Wind to Your Advantage

  • Headwind Strategy: When facing a headwind, pace yourself and don’t try to fight it too hard. Lean slightly forward, engage your core, and shorten your stride to conserve energy. A steady, controlled effort is key.
  • Tailwind Strategy: When running with the wind, use the extra boost to increase your pace, but don’t go overboard. Even though it feels easier, remember that the wind might change directions or intensity, so don’t push too hard too early.

Adjust Your Form

  • Stay Relaxed: The wind can make you tense up, but try to stay relaxed in your upper body, especially your shoulders, arms, and hands. Keep your stride fluid and controlled.
  • Breathing: The wind can make breathing feel more difficult, so focus on deep belly breaths to ensure you’re getting enough oxygen. If the wind is very strong, you might need to adjust your pace to maintain steady breathing.

Plan Your Route

  • Out-and-Back Course: If possible, choose a route that allows you to have the wind at your back for the return leg of your run. This will help you finish strong and make it easier to deal with the wind’s unpredictability.
  • Avoid Open Spaces: If the wind is gusting hard, running in open fields or on exposed paths can be exhausting. Look for more sheltered routes through trees or along buildings, which can block some of the wind.

Hydrate and Fuel Properly

  • Hydration: Windy conditions can cause you to sweat more than you realize, so be sure to stay hydrated before, during, and after your run.
  • Nutrition: Make sure you’re eating well before your run to give your body the energy it needs to handle the added challenge of the wind.

Mindset

  • Embrace the Challenge: Wind can feel discouraging at times, but remember that running in tough conditions can build your mental toughness and physical endurance.
  • Stay Positive: Keep a positive mindset when facing tough conditions. Focus on maintaining your form, adjusting as necessary, and staying patient through the tough sections.

Safety Considerations

  • Watch for Falling Debris: Wind can blow branches, leaves, or other debris into your path, so be extra cautious on less familiar routes.
  • Check the Weather: If conditions are dangerously windy (e.g., gusts over 40-50 mph), it may be worth considering an indoor workout, especially if the wind is combined with rain or extreme cold.
