Hot weather running…Top Tips

Hot weather running…Top Tips

As runners we are all very different and react differently to running in the heat. Nicola always performs well in the warmer weather whereas Neil tends to ‘melt’!

With many years experience of running in all different weathers, here are our  Top Tips for running in the heat.

  1. Adjust the time of day when you run. Early morning or later on in the evening tends to bring slightly cooler weather, which will have less strain on the body.
  2.  Wear a wicking hat. Due to the large surface area of our heads it is always good to keep it covered up, but still allow the air to circulate. This will help to keep the direct sunlight off you.
  3. Wear sunscreen.  Consider putting some sun screen on the exposed bits. Try and avoid any areas where sweat might run the cream into your eyes.
  4. Hydrate. Make sure you start your run off in a good state of hydration and consider carrying some water with you to re-hydrate.
  5. Adjust your pace. We are not machines and will not be able to sustain pace compared to cooler conditions. Be realistic on your expectations and listen to your body.
  6. Dress appropriately. Make sure you wear clothing that allows air to circulate and wicks away the sweat. Maybe a light pair of shorts and a good vest should work.
  7. Consider not running. Our final tip for running in hot weather is to consider missing your session if you do not feel comfortable running in the heat. There is absolutely no shame in it, just save yourself for a cooler day.
