Whether you’re a seasoned racer or just starting out, the world of marathon running is packed with incredible stories, stats, and surprises. Here are five fun facts to get your feet moving and your mind inspired:
1. The Marathon Was Born from a Legend
The marathon distance is inspired by the Greek messenger Pheidippides, who ran from Marathon to Athens (around 25 miles) in 490 BC to announce victory. The 26.2-mile distance we know today was established in the 1908 London Olympics so the race could finish in front of the royal box!
2. Marathons Are for Everyone
Marathon finishers range from elite athletes to everyday runners of all ages and abilities. The oldest recorded marathoner is Fauja Singh, who completed a marathon at 100 years old!
3. You Burn a Lot of Calories
On average, runners burn about 2,600–3,800 calories during a marathon. That’s a lot of post-race snacks!
4. There Are Over 1,100 Marathons Worldwide
From the icy terrain of Antarctica to city streets like New York, Berlin, and Tokyo—there’s a marathon for everyone, everywhere.
5. First Female Marathoner Broke the Rules
In 1967, Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon, despite efforts to physically remove her from the course. She helped pave the way for women in distance running.
Keep Going, No Matter Your Pace
Every step, every mile, every finish line counts. Whether you run, jog, or walk—you’re part of a global tradition full of courage, history, and community.
